Dreaming about your ex — why do I dream about my ex?

Dreaming about an ex is very common and almost never means you should get back together. Research shows that former partners appear in dreams even years after the breakup.
Psychology reads these dreams as an image of something from that relationship still alive in you: an unfinished emotion, a lesson, a fear of repeating the same thing, or a quality you lost along with the person.
Folk dream books link them to the past coming back: news from the ex, old feelings or old mistakes.
What your dream means depends on the details and on what is happening in your love life now. Tell it here and Lyra will help you understand it:
Ex dream meaning in folk dream books
Old dream books don't say "ex", but they know the dream of an old love or an abandoned fiancé. In folk dream books, the most common readings are:
- you dream of your ex: the past will remind you of itself: news, a meeting or an old memory;
- you get back together: you'll repeat an old mistake if you're not careful;
- you argue: you'll free yourself of something that still weighs on you;
- your ex is with someone else: jealousy, or a fear of being abandoned;
- you kiss: old feelings, or longing for a time that has passed;
- your ex cries or asks forgiveness: something between you will be said out loud.
These readings are folklore, and they say something true: a dream of an old love is almost always about the past. But no study shows that such a dream predicts a real meeting or a reunion.
Why do I dream about my ex?
Because relationships leave a trace that lasts long after they end. Dreams reflect what matters to us in waking life, and romantic relationships are among what matters most. If you're asking "I had a dream about my ex, what does it mean?", start there.
In a study by Schredl and Wood (2021, Clocks & Sleep), 425 participants recorded their dreams every day for two weeks, 1,612 dreams in all. The current partner appeared in 16.9% of dreams and an ex-partner in 4.8%: roughly one dream in twenty included an ex. Interactions with the ex in dreams were more often negative (arguments, tension) than with the current partner. But surprisingly, they also held more positive feelings and friendliness. The authors suggest that dreams of the current partner are simply more everyday.
The same paper cites a long-running dream series from one person: even years after a breakup, about 5% of their dreams included the former partner. Dreaming about an ex years later is not unusual.
Dreams about love also affect the day after. In a study by Selterman, Apetroaia, Riela and Aron (2014), people in committed relationships kept a two-week diary of their dreams and of their relationship. When they dreamed of infidelity or felt jealousy in a dream, the next day they felt less close to their partner and argued more. So if you're irritable with your current partner after dreaming about your ex, you're not imagining it. It's worth noticing, and not carrying into the day.
Dreams about ex meaning: the psychological reading
Psychologically, the ex in a dream is most often not the person, but what they represent for you. That is the core of dreaming of your ex: meaning lies in what they stood for. Having dreams about ex partners usually comes down to one of five readings:
- An unfinished emotion. Anger, guilt, sadness or gratitude you never expressed. The dream brings it up so you can finish it, at least inside yourself.
- Comparison with the present. A new relationship, a new person, a new date. The ex comes back as a yardstick: "is it better now?" or "will it happen again?"
- Fear of repetition. If the old relationship was painful, the dream may be a warning: you're seeing the same pattern in the present.
- Longing for who you were then. Often what you miss isn't the person but yourself at that time: younger, freer, in love.
- Loneliness. When you feel alone, the mind goes back to the last place you found closeness.
These are interpretations, not proven causes. Which one (if any) is true for you only shows in the details of your dream and the life around it.
Dreaming about my ex boyfriend, ex girlfriend or ex husband
Who the ex was changes the emphasis, though not the logic.
- A dream about ex boyfriend. Dream about ex boyfriend meaning often has to do with how you felt about yourself in that relationship: protected, ignored, admired. Dreaming of my ex boyfriend while single is often loneliness; while in a relationship, comparison. For dream interpretation, ex boyfriend dreams where he appears with his family point to what you lost besides him: a circle, a home, a future you had pictured.
- A dream about ex girlfriend. The same readings apply. For many men, an ex girlfriend in a dream also stands for tenderness or openness they haven't allowed themselves since.
- A dream of ex husband (or ex wife). A marriage leaves a deeper trace: a shared home, sometimes children, years of habits. A dream of an ex husband often comes at turning points: a new relationship, a move, a child's milestone, the anniversary of the divorce.
Spiritual and biblical meaning of dreaming about your ex
The spiritual meaning of dreaming about your ex, in most traditions, is unfinished business of the heart: a tie that still needs to be released or blessed. Dreaming about an ex years later, spiritual meaning usually adds, is a sign that something is finally ready to be let go.
- Your ex with someone else. The spiritual meaning of dreaming about your ex with someone else is usually read as release: the dream shows the bond ending so you can accept it.
- Biblical meaning. The Bible doesn't interpret dreams about former partners, so any biblical meaning of dreaming about your ex is a later reading. The verse most often reached for is Philippians 3:13: "forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before" (KJV). Read that way, the dream invites you to look forward rather than back.
- An ex who has died. The spiritual meaning of dreaming about your dead ex is usually grief and farewell, not a message from beyond. See also dreams about dead people.
How does Jung see exes in dreams?
Carl Gustav Jung held that when we fall in love, we often see in the other person an inner image of our own: in a man he called it the anima, in a woman the animus. He described this in "The Relations between the Ego and the Unconscious" (1928). Falling in love is partly projection: we love in the other something we carry in ourselves but don't know.
If so, a dream about an ex is also a dream about the part of you that you "gave" to the other person. So a Jungian reading doesn't ask "is he still thinking about me?" but "what of myself did I see in them, and how do I get it back?" For example courage, tenderness, lightness or security you associated with that person.
What does it mean if…
The details change the meaning. Here are the most common variations and how they are usually read psychologically:
- …you dream about your ex every night? Something from the relationship isn't finished inside you yet. "I dream about my ex every night" is one of the most common versions of this dream; a recurring dream usually stops once what holds it is said or understood.
- …you kiss your ex? Longing for closeness or for that time, not necessarily for the person. Sometimes it is making peace with your own past.
- …you have sex dreams about ex partners? Sex dreams about ex partners are usually about intimacy, desire or confidence you associate with that time, not a wish to go back. Dreaming of having sex with your ex while in a new relationship is common and rarely means what it seems to.
- …you get back together? A wish to fix something or finish the story. Sometimes also a fear of falling back into an old pattern.
- …you get engaged to your ex? A dream about getting engaged to an ex usually asks what you wanted that relationship to become, and whether you still want that from someone.
- …your ex is with a new partner? Jealousy, but more often acceptance: the mind "shows" the ending so you can accept it.
- …you argue? Anger you never expressed looking for a way out. Often the dream brings relief.
- …your ex asks for forgiveness? The need to be acknowledged. How you react matters.
- …you ask your ex for forgiveness? Guilt you're carrying. It may be time to forgive yourself.
- …you dream about your ex while in a new relationship? Very common. Usually comparison or fear of repetition, not a sign you love your ex more.
- …your ex is pregnant? Something from the relationship is still growing in you or in them. See also dreams about pregnancy.
- …your ex dies in the dream? Not a prediction. Usually a symbolic ending: the relationship is finally closing inside you.
- …your ex ignores you? A fear that you didn't matter. The dream asks how you treat yourself today.
Nightmares about your ex
Having nightmares about an ex is different from dreaming of them. If you keep saying "I have nightmares about my ex", the relationship probably left fear behind, not only sadness. Nightmares about your ex can be the mind processing what happened, especially after a controlling or violent relationship. If that's the case, see the section on getting help below.
What do our sayings tell us about exes?
Dreams often "think" in the phrases we use every day:
- "Old flames die hard." People have long known what the research confirms: exes come back in dreams for years.
- "Closing the chapter." The dream often shows the chapter isn't closed yet.
- "You can't step in the same river twice." If you dream of getting back together, the dream may be asking what exactly you want to bring back.
- "Living rent-free in my head." Someone left, and is still there.
If one of these phrases sounds familiar right now, you may have found the key to your dream.
Why a dream dictionary can't tell you what your dream means
A dream dictionary gives one meaning: the past comes back. But the same dream about an ex can be about loneliness, a new relationship, guilt, anger, or the version of you that you miss. The difference is in the details and in your life around the dream.
Five questions to ask yourself before you look for a meaning:
- What did I feel in the dream: longing, anger, relief, indifference?
- What did we do or say to each other?
- What was left unsaid between us?
- What in my life now resembles that relationship?
- What did I associate with this person that I miss now?
If the answers already put the picture together, good. If not, that's exactly where a conversation helps:

When to see a professional
A dream about an ex is not, on its own, a reason to worry. It is worth getting help if:
- months or years after the breakup you think about your ex every day and it stops you living, working or starting a new relationship: a psychologist can help;
- the relationship was abusive and the dreams bring the fear back: talking to a professional helps you work through it;
- the dreams lead to sleeplessness or sadness that hasn't eased for weeks: talk to your doctor or a psychologist.
