Fish in a dream — what is the dream meaning of fish?
Fish has one of the best-known meanings in folk dream books: pregnancy. If a woman dreams of a live fish, folk tradition says she, or someone close to her, will become pregnant. A fish is also a sign of luck and profit, especially if you catch it.
Psychology sees in the fish something rising from the depths: an idea, a feeling, an opportunity, or something new that isn't quite visible yet.
Jung considered the fish one of the images of the unconscious: a living creature of deep water that can be caught and brought into the light.
What your dream means depends on the details: what the fish was like, alive or dead, and what you did with it. Tell it here and Lyra will help you understand it:
Fish in a dream: what folk dream books say
In folk tradition a fish is a sign of fertility, increase and luck. In folk dream books, the most common readings are:
- a woman dreams of a live fish: pregnancy, her own or a woman close to her;
- you catch a fish: profit, success, or long-awaited good news;
- a big fish: a big profit or an important event;
- small fish: small joys or small worries;
- a dead fish: disappointment, loss, or a venture that fails;
- a fish slipping out of your hands: a missed opportunity;
- eating fish: health and well-being (if it tastes good) or trouble (if it's spoiled);
- fish in muddy water: someone is taking advantage of the confusion around you.
These readings are folklore, and they say something true: a fish is an image of something alive that comes from the depths and brings a new beginning. But no study links fish dreams with real pregnancy or profit.
Dreaming of fish: meaning pregnancy?
This is one of the most persistent beliefs in folk dream books, and versions of it exist in many cultures. Explanations of where it comes from differ, but a few images clearly help it along:
- A fish lives in water, as a child lives in the womb. Water is an old symbol of life and birth.
- A fish lays thousands of eggs, so in many cultures it is a symbol of fertility.
- A fish is quiet and invisible from above, just like a pregnancy in its first weeks: something alive that can't be seen yet.
Fish also has its place at the festive table in many traditions: carp on Christmas Eve in Central Europe, the Feast of the Seven Fishes in Italian-American homes, and a whole fish at Chinese New Year, because in Chinese the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus. So a fish in a dream can also carry thoughts of celebration, family and home.

Dream meaning of fish: the psychological reading
Psychologically, a fish is most often an image of something alive coming from the depths of the psyche. The five most common readings:
- A new idea or opportunity. Something that surfaces unexpectedly and, if you don't "catch" it, will slip away.
- Fertility and creativity. Not only a child, but a project, a book, a business: something you're "carrying" and that is growing.
- A feeling from the depths. An emotion that has been under the surface and is now showing.
- Something slippery. A person or situation you can't hold on to: evasive, changing, always slipping away.
- Nourishment and care. Fish is food. Sometimes the dream is about what nourishes you: emotionally, spiritually or literally.
These are interpretations, not proven causes. Which one (if any) is true for you only shows in the details of your dream and the life around it.
Do anglers dream of fish?
Probably more than other people, and that says something important about all dreams. Sleep research has long shown that dreams continue waking life: what we spend a lot of time on is more likely to enter our dreams. Psychologists call this the "continuity hypothesis".
In a study by Schredl and Hofmann (2003, Consciousness and Cognition), participants kept a dream diary while also recording exactly how much time they spent on different waking activities. Differences in how much time people spent on an activity really were reflected in their dreams. But not everything enters dreams equally: reading, writing and calculating, for example, appear in dreams very rarely, and many researchers think what moves us gets in more easily.
So if you went fishing last weekend, cleaned fish for a holiday meal, or look at an aquarium every day, the fish in a dream may simply be part of your day. If there was nothing like that, it more likely comes from your inner world.
Biblical and spiritual meaning of fish in a dream
Fish are among the richest symbols in religious tradition, which is why so many people look for a biblical meaning of fish in a dream.
- Biblical meaning of catching fish in a dream. The Bible doesn't interpret fish dreams, so any "biblical meaning" is a later reading built on scripture. In Luke 5:4–6 the disciples fish all night and catch nothing, then let down their nets at Jesus's word and catch so many that the nets break. In Matthew 4:19 Jesus calls them to be "fishers of men" (KJV). So the prophetic meaning of catching fish, in this reading, is abundance after a long, empty wait, or a calling.
- The great fish. In the book of Jonah (1:17) a great fish swallows Jonah, and he is delivered after three days. A big fish in a dream can echo this: being swallowed by something, and coming out changed.
- Dead fish. The biblical meaning of dead fish in a dream usually draws on the first plague of Egypt (Exodus 7:21), when the fish in the river died: something that gave life has gone wrong.
- Fish in Hindu tradition. In Hinduism, Vishnu's first avatar, Matsya, is a fish who saves the first man from a great flood. Read through that story, a fish in dream (Hindu tradition) is an image of rescue and protection.
How does Jung see the fish in dreams?
Carl Gustav Jung devoted much of his book Aion (1951) to the symbol of the fish. There he traces how the fish became a symbol of Christ in early Christianity (the Greek word for fish, ichthys, is an acronym for "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour") and how the Christian era coincides with the astrological age of Pisces.
For Jung, a fish that lives in deep water is a natural image of contents of the unconscious: something alive that can be caught and brought into the light. So a Jungian approach to a fish dream asks "what new thing is rising from the depths in me, and how do I catch it before it slips away?" It starts from your personal associations: what fish means to you, whether you've ever fished, whether you eat fish, whether you associate it with someone.
What does it mean if…
The details change the meaning. Here are the most common variations and how they are usually read psychologically:
- …you dream of a live fish? Something alive and new: an idea, a feeling, an opportunity. For a woman, the traditional meaning is pregnancy.
- …you dream of a dead fish? Something that has lost its life: a project, a relationship or a hope. Sometimes a disappointment you haven't admitted yet.
- …you're catching fish in dream? You're looking for something: a solution, love, work. Catching fish dream meaning: if you catch it, the dream is often about success; if not, about patience.
- …you're dreaming of catching a big fish? A big achievement or a big opportunity on its way. Big fish dream meaning: something important is within reach.
- …you're catching fish with your hands? Getting something through your own effort, without tools or help.
- …the fish slips away from you? Something you can't hold on to: a chance, a person or a thought.
- …you eat fish? You're receiving something you need: strength, knowledge, comfort. Cooked fish dream meaning is close: something prepared and ready to be taken in.
- …you're buying or receiving fish? Buying fish in dream meaning: you're investing in something new. Receiving fish in a dream: someone is offering you an opportunity, or news.
- …you clean a fish? You're sorting out something that weighs on you before you can use it.
- …you dream of a goldfish? A wish waiting to be spoken. The old fairy tale of the golden fish that grants wishes is known across Europe.
- …you're dreaming of fish out of water? A feeling of not being in your place. Someone (maybe you) is suffocating in an environment that isn't theirs.
- …you dream of fish in a tank? Feelings or ideas you keep "under glass": visible, but closed in.
- …you dream of fish swimming in clear water? A clear feeling and a good start. If the water is muddy, something is confused. See also dreams about water.
What do our idioms say about fish?
Dreams often "think" in the phrases we use every day:
- "A fish out of water" is someone outside their element. A fish on dry land in a dream is often exactly that.
- "Something fishy" is a sense that something isn't right.
- "Plenty more fish in the sea" is comfort after a breakup: other chances will come.
- "A big fish in a small pond" is someone important in a small world.
- "Like a fish to water" is someone completely in their element.
If one of these phrases sounds familiar right now, you may have found the key to your dream.
Why a dream dictionary can't tell you what your dream means
A dream dictionary gives one meaning: pregnancy. But the same dream about a fish can be about a child, an idea, money, a person who keeps slipping away, or last weekend's fishing trip. The difference is in the details and in your life around the dream.
Five questions to ask yourself before you look for a meaning:
- What was the fish like: alive, dead, big, small, what colour?
- What did I do with it: catch it, eat it, drop it?
- What new thing is "surfacing" in my life right now?
- Have I been thinking about a child, a pregnancy or a new beginning?
- Have I had anything to do with fish lately: fishing, the market, a holiday meal?
If the answers already put the picture together, good. If not, that's exactly where a conversation helps:
