Dreaming about poop and toilets — what does it mean?
A toilet in a dream is about release: of emotions, of tension, of things you no longer need. A clogged toilet is an image of something that can't get out: feelings you're holding in, words you're not saying, a problem that keeps piling up.
Strange as it sounds, folk dream books link toilets and faeces with money and profit, and a clogged toilet with obstacles and delays.
Toilet dreams are more common than we admit: almost one person in five has dreamed of not finding a toilet, or being embarrassed to use one.
What your dream means depends on the details: where the toilet was, who was around, and what couldn't happen.
Tell it here and Lyra will help you understand it:
Dreaming of poop means money? What folk dream books say
In folk tradition, filth in a dream is read in reverse, like many "unpleasant" dreams: faeces in a dream are a sign of money. That's why so many people search whether dreaming of poop means money: in many folk dream books, it does. The most common readings:
- a clean toilet: order in your affairs, relief;
- a dirty toilet, or poop: money and profit, but sometimes gossip;
- a clogged toilet: obstacles, delayed money, work that gets stuck;
- an overflowing toilet: trouble coming out into the open, or too many worries at once;
- not finding a toilet: an awkward situation you can't get out of;
- a toilet without a door: fear of gossip, of your private life becoming public.
These readings are folklore, and they say something true about the symbol: the toilet is where the body lets go. But no study links toilet dreams with real money.
Dreaming about poop meaning: the psychological reading
Psychologically, the faeces dream meaning is usually about what you need to get rid of, and about shame. The dream of pooping meaning most often falls under one of these:
- Letting go. Something used up, digested and no longer useful: a relationship, a habit, a role. Dreaming of pooping meaning, here, is relief.
- Shame and exposure. Dreams about pooping in front of others, or dreaming of pooping in public, are about the fear of being seen in a vulnerable moment. In research these dreams group with being naked in public (see below).
- A mess you have to deal with. A dream of poop, or dreams about poop everywhere, mean a situation has become messy and you can't avoid stepping in it. Dreaming of poop in your hand, or dreaming of wiping your poop, can be about taking responsibility for your own mess.
The dream interpretation of poop always depends on the feeling. Relief and disgust point in opposite directions.
Spiritual meaning of poop in a dream
The spiritual meaning of pooping in a dream is, in most traditions, cleansing: the body, and by extension the soul, letting go of what it doesn't need. The spiritual meaning of poop, read this way, is a good sign.
- Biblical meaning of dreaming of poop. The Bible doesn't interpret such dreams, so any "biblical meaning" is a later reading. But one verse is often quoted: in Philippians 3:8 Paul says he counts everything he has given up "but dung, that I may win Christ" (KJV). In that light, dreaming of faeces has a biblical meaning of shedding what no longer matters to gain something better.
Clogged toilet dream: what does it mean?
The clogged toilet is the most common version of the toilet dream. In folk dream books it is a sign of obstacles and delay: money that doesn't arrive, work that gets stuck, unsettled matters.
Psychologically, a clogged toilet is usually about something held in:
- emotions you don't express: anger, sadness, hurt that "sit" and build up;
- words you don't say: a conversation you keep putting off;
- a problem you don't solve, and that will overflow if you don't deal with it;
- overload: too much coming in, and nothing going out.
If the toilet overflows in the dream, it is often a fear that what you've held in will come out at the worst moment. If you unclog it, the dream is hopeful: you're starting to deal with what has built up.
What does a toilet mean in a dream psychologically?
Psychologically, a toilet is most often read as a place of release and of privacy. The five most common readings:
- Emotional release. A need to let out something you've carried for a long time.
- Letting go of the old. Relationships, habits, thoughts you no longer need.
- Personal space. The toilet is where a person is alone. A toilet with no door, or full of people, is a dream about violated boundaries.
- Shame. Discomfort with the body, with its needs, with being seen at a vulnerable moment.
- A bodily need. Sometimes the dream simply reflects a full bladder: the body "prompts" the dream about what is happening to it.
These are interpretations, not proven causes. Which one (if any) is true for you only shows in the details of your dream and the life around it.
How often do we dream about toilets?
More often than people talk about. In a study of typical dreams among 1,181 Canadian students (Nielsen and colleagues, 2003), 19.2% said they had dreamed at least once of not being able to find a toilet, or being embarrassed about using one. Women dream it significantly more often: 21.4% against 13.8% of men.
The most interesting part is which dreams it grouped with in the statistical analysis: being naked, being inappropriately dressed, and sexual dreams. What they share is the private becoming public. That's why a dream of a toilet with no door, or a toilet in the middle of a crowd, is so unpleasant: it is a dream about boundaries. If what you were wearing mattered in the dream, read also dreams about clothes.
How the body gets into the dream
Dreams often use what the body feels while we sleep. In a classic experiment, the sleep researchers Dement and Wolpert (1958) sprayed sleepers with water during dreaming sleep. Some of them wove the water into their dreams; one dreamed that the roof was leaking and water was dripping onto his back and head.
So if you often dream of toilets and wake needing to get up, the simplest explanation may be physical. If it happens every night, see the section on getting help below.
What does it mean if…
The details change the meaning. Here are the most common variations and how they are usually read psychologically:
- …the toilet is clogged? Something held in: emotions, words, a problem that's piling up.
- …the toilet overflows? Fear that what you've held in will come out, or a sense that you can't control something.
- …you unclog the toilet? You're starting to deal with what has built up. Usually a hopeful dream.
- …you can't find a toilet? You have no place or time for yourself, or can't find a way to express something.
- …the toilet is dirty? An unpleasant situation you have to go through. Folk dream books read it as money.
- …the toilet has no door? Violated boundaries, a fear that your private life will become public.
- …there are people around you in the toilet? No personal space, or a feeling of being watched.
- …you're cleaning a toilet? Clearing up something unpleasant, sometimes someone else's mess. See also dreaming of cleaning a house.
- …the toilet is in a stranger's home? An awkward situation in an unfamiliar setting: a new job, a new family.
- …you step in dog poop? A small mess someone else left that you've walked into. Some readers look for a biblical meaning of dog poop in a dream; in a lot of European folklore, stepping in it simply means luck.
- …you flush and feel lighter? Release, the end of something that weighed on you.
What do our idioms say?
Dreams often "think" in the phrases we use every day:
- "Bottled up" is holding feelings in. A clogged toilet is a literal image of it.
- "Getting it off your chest" is saying everything you carry. The dream may show you need exactly that.
- "The last straw" is when patience runs out. An overflowing toilet in a dream is the same, only cruder.
- "In deep doo-doo" is being in trouble. Poop everywhere can be that phrase in images.
- "Flushing it away" is giving something up and moving on. Flushing in the dream may be that moment.
If one of these phrases sounds familiar right now, you may have found the key to your dream.
Why a dream dictionary can't tell you what your dream means
A dream dictionary gives one meaning: poop is money, a clogged toilet is obstacles. But the same clogged toilet can be about anger you're not expressing, overload at work, relatives invading your home, or simply a full bladder. The difference is in the details and in your life around the dream.
Five questions to ask yourself before you look for a meaning:
- Where was the toilet, and whose was it?
- What couldn't happen, and what did I feel?
- What have I been holding in lately?
- Where am I missing personal space?
- Have I had this dream before, and what was going on then?
If the answers already put the picture together, good. If not, that's exactly where a conversation helps:
Tell Lyra your dream
Lyra works like a Jungian analyst: first she asks about the details and about your life, then she interprets. And she remembers your symbols from one dream to the next.
When to see a professional
A dream about a toilet is not, on its own, a reason to worry. It is worth seeing a doctor if:
- you wake up every night, several times, to use the toilet, or toilet dreams come with wetting the bed;
- you have pain, burning or any other change when you urinate, or in your bowel habits;
- the nightmares recur often and disturb your sleep for weeks.
Lyra is a companion for reflection, not a medical service, and doesn't replace seeing a doctor.
